These two hand cranked devices came out of
a Russian encyclopedia of mechanical movements. We have no idea
what they were actually used for, but the geometry of each is
fascinating. In the first one an oval gear, powered via a planetary
gear, walks around in a triangle. Turning the crank on the second
one makes five pens, on linkages connected to a set of gears,
draw interesting shapes.
